In many cultures, portraiture has historically been associated with prestige and power.
In this portrait series, Joey depicts her Disabled friends and family members. She chose this subject for two reasons -- to question existing power structures and to showcase the diversity of disability.
Throughout the Disability Rights movement, activists have championed the slogan "Nothing About Us Without Us."
"About Us" derives its name from both this slogan and this sentiment. The perspectives of Disabled people were taken into account during every step of the portrait process.
