Over the years, Joey has found several adaptive strategies to create her works.
Though each artist will have different needs based on their abilities, styles, and preferences, here are some of the strategies that have worked for her.
Finding the right tools and strategies is a trial and error process. If you are an artist, Joey recommends having fun and experimenting as you figure out what works best for you.
An adjustable easel allows Joey to prop up her paintings so they're easier for her to see. As she paints, she can move her works to her preferred viewing distance of about three to four inches from her face. She prefers to use lightweight aluminum folding easels because of their ease-of-use and portability.
Working with a larger surface area allows her to see more of her work without feeling overwhelmed.
Joey has enough remaining color vision to distinguish between different paint shades when they're brought up close to her face. However, she finds it is more convenient to label her paint tubes with tactile stickers and rubber bands so she can tell what's what from a greater distance
Joey often takes reference photos on her iPhone. She then zooms in on those pictures while holding her phone about three to four inches away from her face.
Trays and poster boards make it easier for Joey to keep her tools organized while she paints. Placing black poster boards under her easels protects the tables and floors she sits at from stray drops of paint. The trays help prevent her tools from rolling away. Using paint palettes with plastic divots helps her keep track of the colors she's squeezed out.
